Whilst on placement individuals will have an overview of the therapy service in an acute hospital, and profession specific information on Occupational Therapy and the unique contribution to patient care.
PLACEMENT DETAILS:
Individuals will have the opportunity to observe how our patients are identified as needing Occupational Therapy, routine Occupational Therapy assessments and interventions to enable the patient to achieve their own individual goals for discharge.
There will be some discussion on other services in the community who we refer to both to get equipment that is needed for discharge and the difference in Occupational Therapy approach after the patient is home.
Individuals will assist and observe Occupational Therapists and assistants in a range of tasks. Teams are in the specialities of orthopaedics (trauma or elective), general medicine and surgery, A&E and frailty and outpatient hand therapy.
Individuals will be encouraged to ask questions and link your observations to their learning at school. Individuals are encouraged to gather evidence of what they have done and observed, and reflect on their learning as this can be used for CV / personal statements if applying to UCAS or employment.
Genuine interest in the field is required, as is struct confidentialty and good communication skills.

No jewellery, nail varnish, or strong perfume / aftershave, Sturdy, flat, enclosed, sensible footwear Other: • Clinical areas can be warm so it is better to wear several light layers that can be removed if necessary • Clothes should be changed daily to prevent cross infection • Individuals will be provided with a work experience identity badge that should be prominently displayed whilst on placement but should not be worn off site • Individuals need to be well presented, neat and clean • Clothes should allow for a range of movements • Trousers or a skirt can be worn with a shirt, polo shirt or short sleeved blouse. • Skirts should not be too short and blouses should not be low cut • Make up should be kept simple and only minimal perfume worn. • No hats, hoods or sunglasses. PPE provided as and when required. Bare below the elbow. Long hair tied back and above the collarbone.

• The learner is not permitted access to Theatres
• The learner is not permitted access to Maternity, obs. & gynae., ICU or children’s wards
• Any activity which may jeopardize the safety of patients or students
• The learner will not enter areas designated as off limits or use/interfere with equipment also considered as off limits or misuse/interfere with anything provided in the interests of health and safety
• The learner will not disclose confidential information to third parties
• The learner will not have access to unsuitable material on the internet
• The learner will not take any photos on their work experience without prior authorisation of staff and parents
• Any activities for which specialized training is required i.e. Manual Handling
• The learner will not work at heights
• The learner will not drive any vehicles
• Any activity involving contact with clinical waste products/by products
• The learner will not have contact with hazardous substances e.g. toxics, irritants, oxidising agents, explosives, corrosives, highly flammables
• The learner will not wear excessive facial or dangling jewellery - Other than stud earrings, facial piercings and ear stretchers are not permitted
• The learner will not provide personal care to patients
• The learner will not dispense/administer drugs or medicines
• The use of mobile phones and personal music equipment e.g. iPods are not allowed during working hours without prior approval of the supervisor

• At no time will the learner be left alone on the premises and will be supervised at all times, except meal breaks
• Learners may not be supervised at lunch time and may leave the premises
• The learner will not work unsupervised unless on unsupervised errands, enter areas designated as off limits or use/interfere with equipment also considered as off limits or misuse with anything provided in the interest of health & safety.
